South Africa: 27 killed in nightclub shootings

Several people armed with rifles killed 17 people and wounded 15 others at a bar in western Johannesburg on Saturday evening, local police announced today.

“They searched several patrons, taking their cell phones before fleeing in two cars,” police added, clarifying that the shooting incident happened at around 21:30 local time.

South African police added that they have launched a manhunt to arrest the suspects, whose motives, they said, remain unknown, and clarified that they are “suspected to have been armed with rifles and AK-47-type weapons”.

Another 10 people were killed and 11 wounded in a shooting incident in a neighborhood near Cape Town overnight from Saturday to Sunday, local police said.

Armed men entered an entertainment venue in Luandle at 01:46 local time and “opened fire on patrons”, South African police said.
