The Battle Over AI: Trump Takes on Tech Executives
U.S. President Donald Trump has sharply criticized Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, after the latter’s call for more careful monitoring and control of artificial intelligence development.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump described the situation as a “sick conspiracy” against AI and data centers. He argued that the technology needs no additional control measures, declaring that “the only check or ‘guardrail’ AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART PRESIDENT.”
The reactions come at a time when tech company stocks in Asia, Europe and the U.S. have fallen, after AI industry leaders backed Amodei’s call for closer monitoring of the technology’s development, with the aim of reducing the risk that “something goes seriously wrong.”
Grok founder Elon Musk has also spoken in support of Amodei, saying he is “right.” Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has declared that current standards are “not in the right place” to allow a much bigger push of AI capabilities.
According to expert analyses, a slowdown of American AI companies could give China the opportunity to narrow the gap in the race for technological dominance.
Questions about the risk AI could pose to humanity, the possibility of slowing its development, and whether existing laws are sufficient to protect society from these risks remain at the center of the international debate.
Trump, meanwhile, has also attacked critics of AI development, describing some of them as “conspiracy theorists, traitors and leakers of information.” He insisted that the U.S. continues to lead the global AI race and will maintain its dominance.
