Thousands of protesters take to the streets of Madrid over the Ceuta migrant crisis
Thousands of people are taking part on Saturday in the “March for Dignity” in Madrid, with protesters calling for a solution to the situation with migrants in Ceuta.
The demonstration, organized by Sociedad Civil Espanola with the support of the Popular Party (PP) and Vox, started shortly after 10:00 from Plaza de Cibeles and headed toward the Arco del Triunfo in Moncloa, where it is expected to end in the afternoon.
Among the participants was also the leader of Vox, Santiago Abascal, who insisted that the migrants who arrived in Ceuta must return to their country of origin and launched a harsh attack on the way the government handled the crisis.
“Ceuta remains occupied because Sanchez continues to be a servant of Morocco; the migrant invasion is being encouraged,” he said, referring to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.
A separate “March for Dignity”, held before the massive influx of migrants at the end of July, saw tens of thousands of people gather to demand Sanchez’s resignation and the holding of early elections.
According to the Government Delegation, that demonstration drew about 40,000 people, while organizers put the figure as high as 120,000.
On September 2, Ceuta’s official day, thousands of people also took to the streets in cities across Spain in a demonstration organized by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces.
