Trump Rejects Iran’s Proposal for a Conditional Ceasefire
US President Donald Trump has rejected an Iranian proposal for a seven-day ceasefire, which would have been tied to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the resumption of negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program.
According to reporting cited by The Wall Street Journal, the proposal was made in the context of diplomatic contacts in New York.
Under the plan presented by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Tehran could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the US lifted its naval blockade of Iranian ports, eased restrictions on oil exports and accepted a ceasefire that also included Lebanon.
Negotiations on the nuclear issue would then resume.
US reporting, however, says President Trump rejected this proposal.
Citing US officials, The Wall Street Journal reports that President Trump told associates he is prepared for the possibility of resuming bombings against Iran after the US midterm elections in November.
These are reports of privately expressed positions, not an official announcement of a future operation.
At the same time, diplomatic channels have not been fully closed.
Other reports say talks through mediators continue and that the nuclear issue remains part of the discussions.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has also stated that Iran could allow the return of international nuclear energy inspectors as part of an agreement.
