U.S. — Powerful storm slams the Northeast; New York and New Jersey declare state of emergency

A powerful coastal storm, known as a “nor’easter”, has slammed the northeastern United States, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, coastal flooding and power outages, according to Reuters.

The governors of New York and New Jersey declared a state of emergency in the areas expected to be hit hardest by the storm. In New Jersey, the state of emergency took effect at 5 p.m. on Friday, September 25, in the counties of Atlantic, Burlington, Cape May, Cumberland, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean and Salem. Authorities activated the State Emergency Operations Center to coordinate the response.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service, the storm is expected to bring coastal flooding, dangerous surf, strong winds and heavy rain. Difficult conditions are expected to continue through the weekend and into Monday.

The storm also caused considerable transport problems. Over 400 flights were canceled, while a large number of others were delayed. Meanwhile, power outages at their peak affected more than 100,000 homes and businesses across the region. In some coastal areas, heavy rain and strong winds caused flooding and downed trees.

Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to exercise special caution on roads affected by water. In New York, local authorities activated emergency structures to monitor the situation.
