UKRAINE – Parliament Dismisses Prosecutor General After Corruption Scandal
KIEV, September 15 /ATSH-DPA/ — Ukraine’s parliament voted today to dismiss Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko over a corruption scandal in his office.
A majority of 317 MPs backed the motion for his dismissal, presented by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Kravchenko had submitted his resignation about a week earlier, after the corruption scandal, but had called the decision “political.”
In a video published yesterday outside Ukraine, he accused Ukrainian anti-corruption authorities and demanded the resignation of their leaders.
Kravchenko also declared that he was abroad on an official trip.
In response, Zelensky called on MPs to dismiss Kravchenko as soon as possible.
Although some six anti-corruption institutions have been created since 2014, with the support of Western countries, Ukraine continues to be considered by experts of the non-governmental organization “Transparency International” among the most corrupt countries in Europe.
