Vučić on Von der Leyen’s Cancelled Visit: An ‘Elegant Way’ to Drop Serbia from the Balkan Tour

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić on Friday described as “an elegant way” Brussels’ decision to cancel European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s visit to Serbia, citing elections at the end of October.

Asked by journalists on the sidelines of the Carpathian Initiative Summit in Ukraine about the cancellation of von der Leyen’s visit to Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, Vučić said “they found an elegant way to say that this is because of the elections.”

“I think Ursula (von der Leyen) is far too smart and clever to have illusions, or not to know what public opinion in Serbia is. I am sure she knows it well,” the Serbian president stressed.

The European Commission president, as part of the Western Balkans tour scheduled from September 30 to October 2, had been expected to visit Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Kosovo and Bosnia-Herzegovina. But according to the EU announcement, due to elections being held in Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, von der Leyen will skip those two countries.

Vučić’s reaction comes after 24-ore.com earlier today reported Brussels’ decision to remove Belgrade and Sarajevo from the tour agenda, while the Serbian president’s fresh official reaction has now also been reported.
