Tragedy in Italy: Garbage Truck Fatally Strikes 42-Year-Old Albanian Woman
A 42-year-old Albanian woman has lost her life after being struck by a garbage truck in San Donà di Piave, near Venice, Italy.
The accident happened shortly before 8:00 a.m. on Via Passarella, at the intersection with Via Paolo VI. Lavdije Isteri, a mother of three, was taking her youngest child, 9, to school when she was hit by the garbage truck turning right into a side street.
The tragedy unfolded before her daughter’s eyes. Emergency services and firefighters responded immediately, using a crane to lift the truck and attempt to free the woman.
A witness, Giada Buratto, a mother of other young pupils, said the girl had already crossed the street and was slightly ahead of her mother.
“Fortunately, the little girl was slightly ahead of her mother and had already crossed the street,” she said.
Meanwhile, at the Marco Polo Primary School, children did not go out for break, while parents leaving the school were still in shock.
The accident has reignited debate over the safety of heavy vehicles in cities and the prevention of blind spots. The Veritas company truck was one of the oldest, fitted with mirrors to improve visibility but lacking some of the more modern safety features.
The vehicle’s driver was also shaken by the incident.
“This news leaves us shaken and deeply saddened,” said Simone Cereser, Security Councillor in San Donà di Piave, expressing his condolences to the family.
Local police are investigating the accident to determine its causes.
