Araghchi: Iran awaiting formal U.S. response through mediators on 7-day Hormuz proposal
Tehran expects mediators to convey Washington’s final position on the seven-day proposal for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resuming nuclear talks, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said — leaving the door to diplomacy open despite the public rejection by U.S. President Donald Trump, as Al Jazeera reports.
Trump said on Saturday he had rejected the proposal, claiming Tehran seeks a deal because “they’re dying — the money isn’t coming in.” Araghchi said Iran had seen the reaction, but was “waiting for the mediators to convey the final American position” before taking a final decision, according to Reuters.
“Our conditions are clear, and any move toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz depends on these conditions being met,” Araghchi was quoted as saying. “Only a negotiated solution can get them [the U.S.] out of this deadlock. This is our position.”
The Iranian proposal, presented by Araghchi at the UN General Assembly in New York, foresees a seven-day roadmap: a cessation of hostilities on all fronts, the release of frozen Iranian assets, the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade, and the reopening of Hormuz on the seventh day, ahead of resuming nuclear talks.
Trump, for his part, has said privately, according to the Wall Street Journal, that he is skeptical Iran will meet American demands and told aides he expects bombing to resume after the November midterm elections — a threat that keeps the war at boiling point despite the diplomatic channels that remain open.
