Araghchi Meets Egyptian Foreign Minister Abdelatty in New York: Palestine, Israeli Aggression and Stronger Iran–Egypt Ties on the Table
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met on Thursday afternoon in New York with his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelatty, on the margins of the high-level segment of the 81st United Nations General Assembly. At the center of the talks were the Palestinian issue and the expansion of bilateral ties between Tehran and Cairo, according to the Iranian news agency WANA.
Araghchi stressed the moral and international legal responsibility of all countries, in particular Islamic countries, to stop what he called the genocide of the Palestinian people. He described the Palestinian cause as the greatest humanitarian and moral crisis of the contemporary world, saying all countries are obligated to confront the occupation, help realize the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and support the creation of an independent Palestinian state with Al-Quds as its capital.
The head of Iranian diplomacy also referred to Israeli aggression against Lebanon, Syria and other countries of the region, stressing the need to strengthen coordination among regional countries, including within the United Nations and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, to confront Israeli expansionism and attacks on regional security and stability.
The two ministers also exchanged views on strengthening Iran–Egypt relations and bilateral cooperation, at a time when both countries are intensifying diplomatic contacts over the region’s crises — from Gaza and Yemen to the Iranian crisis and maritime navigation security. The meeting comes in a busy diplomatic week in New York, where both Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Araghchi are using the assembly to present Tehran’s position on the war with the U.S.
Egypt has in recent years played a key mediating role in efforts for a ceasefire in the region, and Cairo has reiterated that there is no military solution to the Iranian nuclear issue and other regional crises, calling for the advancement of political solutions and dialogue.
