Araghchi meets Saudi foreign minister in New York: talks on the sidelines of the UN Assembly
Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi has met Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. The news was reported by Iranian broadcaster IRIB, while Iranian media published footage of the two officials shaking hands before sitting down for talks.
The meeting comes at a critical moment in the seven-month US–Iran war, with Riyadh on the front line of attacks by the Houthis — the Tehran-backed militia — which have struck oil facilities and Saudi provinces, forcing the kingdom to intercept ballistic missiles.
In New York, Araghchi has held a series of intensive diplomatic meetings this week, including talks with American intermediaries and a meeting with the Egyptian foreign minister, as Tehran has presented its seven-day proposal for reopening Hormuz and ending the war, Al Jazeera notes in its “Iran war live” blog of September 25, 2026.
Saudi Arabia and Iran, perennial regional rivals, have kept channels of contact open even during the war; a meeting at foreign-minister level signals that regional diplomacy remains active in the face of escalation.
