Carlos Correa injury update: Astros star out for the rest of the season

The Houston Astros will be without their shortstop Carlos Correa for the rest of the season, after an ankle problem that has kept him off the field for most of the year.

According to Bleacher Report, manager Joe Espada told reporters on Tuesday that Correa will miss the remainder of the season. Correa had undergone surgery on his left ankle in May and was expected to recover within six to eight months; however, ramping up his rehab caused pain and fatigue in the foot, dimming hopes for a return before the playoffs.

Before this matchup he had played in 32 games, with three home runs and 16 RBI, registering a .279/.369/.418 batting line. The Athletic reported that Correa had planned to return to the spring training complex in Florida to meet with doctors and assess the possibility of a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sugar Land; Ken Rosenthal added that if he were to return, the team was considering placing him at second base, although he has played only at third and shortstop during his career. The Astros are currently atop the AL West at 75-75, one game ahead of the Texas Rangers, and will face the Kansas City Royals after a losing series against the Tampa Bay Rays over the weekend.

Espada stressed that there has been no intentional setback in the recovery process, but that the priority now is full healing and preparation for next season; the team will continue its playoff push without Correa.
