Destin Daniel Cretton Signs 3-Year Deal With Sony Pictures After “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” Success

Destin Daniel Cretton, director of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” — the film that grossed $2.478 billion worldwide and $944.4 million in the U.S. alone, surpassing “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” as the highest-grossing film ever in America — has signed a three-year overall deal with Sony Pictures, The Hollywood Reporter reports.

The deal covers his production company, Hisako Films, as well as his collaborator Jeyun Munford. According to the report, the project envisions developing new IPs or existing Sony titles, although Cretton directing future films is not guaranteed.

Sony film group chairman Sanford Panitch described the director in warm terms: “Destin is a very special human, a deeply thoughtful visionary mind, a brilliant filmmaker in its truest sense…” — signaling the studio’s confidence in his vision.

The deal does NOT specifically mention “Spider-Man 5.” Meanwhile, Cretton’s slate remains packed: he has in the pipeline the live-action “Naruto” adaptation at Lionsgate, a “Shang-Chi 2” with screenwriter Dave Callaham for Marvel, and the “Hawaii Five-0” series reboot.
