Fire in Gjinar continues for days, residents call for intervention from the air (VIDEO)

The fire that has engulfed the mountains of Gjinar in Elbasan for several days remains active, while the flames are spreading into deep areas with rugged terrain.

The difficult terrain conditions are hampering the firefighters’ intervention in all the hotspots, while strong winds and vegetation, mainly pine forests, favour the spread of the flames.

Residents of the area say they are concerned about the situation, which according to them has worsened in recent hours. They are calling for intervention from the air, stressing the need to use helicopters or aircraft to halt the fire’s advance.

According to the residents, if the flames continue to spread at the same pace, the danger could come close to inhabited areas as well.

Meanwhile, firefighters remain engaged on the ground, working to keep the active hotspots under control. However, limited access to some of the areas caught by the fire makes intervention with ground equipment considerably harder.

Residents are appealing for the air intervention to be sped up, in order to isolate the flames and prevent the fire from spreading further towards inhabited areas.
