Nations League: Bocherov — Albania the strongest team, we aim for first place in the group

Valery Bocherov, midfielder of the Belarus national team, spoke about the team’s preparations for the Nations League.

What can you tell us about your group opponents — Albania, Finland and San Marino? Have you had the chance to study them already?

“Of course we’re following our opponents. I’m also interested to see where their players play. Maybe the Albanians stand out the most; they play in good leagues and I’ve seen players who feature in Italy. Still, I can’t say anything more concrete for the moment. I know they’re all strong teams.”

The first match is against Albania. In the recent qualifiers, Belarus has often struggled in its opening matches. What is the reason for this and how can it be overcome?

“I would perhaps agree with you that, sometimes, the first match doesn’t really go well. It all has to do with the pressure and the sense of responsibility for the result. As for how it can be overcome, that’s probably a question for the coaching staff. I think we’ll be fine.”

Should the coaches offer extra motivation?

“Of course. But in general, when it comes to the national team, we don’t really need extra motivation. We don’t need to be pushed or given a boost. Everyone understands their own responsibility and knows that both the country and the fans will support us.”

The team faces the task of competing for first place. How prepared do you feel to achieve this goal?

“I think the team is very well prepared. We’re setting ourselves the highest goals. Of course, I can’t promise we’ll take first place. But we’ll do everything we can to achieve it — that’s 100 percent. I’m sure of it.”

“All those who take the field and those who will help from the bench must be together. We’ll definitely do everything to achieve the best possible result. We’ll take it game by game and expect the best possible outcome,” Bocherov told Belarusian media.
