Rubio: Serbia Is Involved in “Potentially Problematic and Explosive” Issues

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that Serbia is involved in “potentially problematic and explosive” issues of international interest, without disclosing which issues he meant. He made the statement to the media on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, today, September 24, 2026.

Rubio stressed that despite this, the U.S. administration aims to deepen its strategic partnership with Serbia, while addressing the issues that may arise at the same time.

“Of course, Serbia is involved in some issues that are potentially problematic and explosive and in which there is international interest,” Rubio said. “But this is a strategic partnership that we want to deepen, and we aim to do that while at the same time dealing with some of the possible issues that may emerge and that deeply involve Serbia.”

He said the U.S. administration has already taken steps toward closer relations with Belgrade — representatives of the State Department and other U.S. agencies have visited Serbia — and expressed hope that he would visit the country, currently led by Aleksandar Vučić, himself.
