Senior Iranian official to Reuters: No concessions on the nuclear program, even if the U.S. accepts the Hormuz proposal
Iran will show no flexibility on its nuclear program, even if the United States accepts Tehran’s new proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a senior Iranian official said Friday in an interview with Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The official stressed that the strategic waterway will remain closed “until all of Iran’s conditions are met” by Washington — a stance that hardens Iran’s position just a day after the new diplomatic proposal.
The proposal was presented Thursday by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi: Tehran offered to reopen Hormuz within seven days, end hostilities on all fronts — including Lebanon — as well as lift the U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports, release Iran’s frozen funds and remove sanctions on oil.
The new statement comes after seven months of war between Iran and the United States, which has again escalated tensions in the Middle East, with Iran-backed Houthi militants launching missile and drone attacks against Saudi Arabia.
Iran, which has no nuclear weapons, denies seeking them; U.S. President Trump has cited weakening Iran’s nuclear capabilities as one of the war’s objectives and on Tuesday threatened Iran with “annihilation” if no deal is reached.
