Vučić at the UN General Assembly: “The International System as We Knew It Has Been Destroyed”

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić addressed tonight the general debate of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He spoke in the afternoon session, fifth in line — after the presidents of Poland (Karol Nawrocki), Namibia (Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah), Slovakia (Peter Pellegrini) and Kenya (William Ruto). After him, the floor was taken by the representatives of Mozambique, Eswatini, Honduras, Montenegro, Venezuela, Uganda, Rwanda, Spain, Andorra and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

At the center of the speech was the birth of a new world order. “The international system as we knew it has been destroyed. It no longer exists. Today we are witnessing the birth of a new order, oriented around two main centers of power, alongside an ever-growing number of strong regional actors…,” Vučić declared from the UN podium.

According to the Serbian president, conflicts are increasingly waged through economic pressures, technological restrictions, the battle for resources and markets, cyberattacks and disinformation, while the line between peace and conflict becomes ever blurrier.

Vučić had earlier warned that in his speech he would speak about the injustices and the non-objective and unfair approach of the international community toward Serbia in past decades. The theme of the 81st session was “Restoring trust, managing transformation: United Nations delivering for all.”

On the sidelines of the Assembly, the Serbian president held a series of bilateral meetings — with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, North Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset, European Council President António Costa and US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau. Tonight he also announced a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, after which a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin is also expected.
