Cavan Sullivan stays in dazzling form with brilliant brace
In the Sunday Night Soccer clash in San Diego, Cavan Sullivan continued his extraordinary season by scoring the opener for the Philadelphia Union just before halftime. The 16-year-old drifted into the box, latched onto a low cross from Indiana Vassilev and finished with a back-post strike that nestled near the far post.
As mlssoccer reports, Sullivan was not done: in the 62nd minute he received another pass from Vassilev and with a powerful finish from a tight angle scored the second goal, putting the Union up 2-0. It was his first brace in MLS.
With these two goals, Sullivan has reached 16 direct goal contributions this season (6 goals and 10 assists), including 5 goals and 6 assists in the last seven games. He leads the team in assists and is joint second in the scoring charts, while recently breaking Freddie Adu’s record for the most contributions in an MLS season by a player aged 16 or younger.
This run of success has intensified calls for his inclusion in the U.S. national team and boosted his chances of making the fall roster under Pochettino. According to mlssoccer, his performance against San Diego FC strengthens that case.
