Levica: electricity is ‘cheap’ only on paper — the party demands reform of the tariff system
The Levica party is demanding a deep reform of the electricity tariff system in North Macedonia. As Makfax reports, referring to the party’s statement published on 2 October 2026, electricity in the country is ‘cheap’ only on paper: the nominal price expressed in euros is roughly at the level of Serbia and Albania, but according to EUROSTAT data for the second half of 2025, when the price is measured against purchasing power (PPS), North Macedonia bears the heaviest burden of electricity costs in the Western Balkans.
According to Levica, talking about nominal prices without taking incomes into account is deceptive: 100 denars do not have the same value for someone on the minimum wage and for someone with a high income. The real question, the statement says, is how much you can buy with your wage and what share of the family budget the electricity bill takes.
Levica accuses the Energy Regulatory Commission (RKE) of frequent changes to regulations and tariff models, which it says are made in favour of the political-energy oligarchy. While the regulator keeps changing the rules of the game, the burden of the dysfunctional system, according to the party, falls on the citizens.
Levica’s demands include keeping the tariff blocks but expanding the time interval of the cheap tariff; designating ‘ELEM Sales’ by law as the universal supplier, with a margin twice as small as EVN Home’s current margin of 9.9 per cent; and moving to a multi-tariff system — winter and summer, with more time blocks, plus a solar tariff that aligns production with demand, uses solar surpluses and lowers bills. Energy, Levica stresses, must serve the public interest, not the enrichment of intermediaries.
