Roman Reigns Retains WWE’s Top Title Against Penta in Mexico City, Despite Crowd Reaction
Roman Reigns defeated Penta to retain the WWE world heavyweight title in the main event of Monday Night Raw in Mexico City, although the crowd visibly backed Penta and showed harsh reactions toward the champion. Penta had moments of dominance with his high-flying style, but Reigns managed to fight back and secure the victory.
As Bleacher Report notes, AAA general manager Rey Mysterio created an eight-man tournament to determine the challenger in Raw’s historic return to Mexico City after 15 years. Penta beat a series of strong opponents, including Laredo Kid, La Parka and his brother Rey Fenix, to earn the spot as the number one contender.
Penta had previously achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first Mexican-born wrestler to win the Intercontinental Championship this year, but lost the title at SummerSlam last month and then set his sights on bigger targets. Reigns, meanwhile, came off a successful defense against Seth Rollins and admitted that Penta’s aerial style posed an unusual challenge.
In the end, Reigns managed to defeat the masked luchador in front of a loud Mexico City audience, while Penta remains an important name in Raw’s main-event scene and could return to title contention in the future. According to Bleacher Report, the episode marked WWE’s return to Mexico and left room for further developments between the two wrestlers.
