Jović rescues AEK in Volos: Serbian striker’s brace seals 1-2 win

AEK secured their first away win of the season in the Greek championship, triumphing 2-1 at the Panthessaliko Stadium against Volos Elabet in the match valid for the 5th round of the Stoiximan Super League. The absolute hero of the yellow-and-blacks was Luka Jović, author of both goals.

The Serbian opened the scoring in the 61st minute, winning and converting a controversial penalty himself — brought down in the box by Mygas, in a decision by referee Polychronis that sparked strong protests from the hosts. Volos equalised at 1-1 around the 85th minute with Haralaboglou’s goal, but just three minutes later Jović was decisive again: in the 88th minute, with a header, he sealed AEK’s triumph.

The match in Volos was full of chances and controversy. The hosts had a goal disallowed by VAR in the 44th minute (Furtado, offside), hit the crossbar through Comb and protested for a penalty in the same minute. AEK, meanwhile, claimed a penalty in the 47th minute for a handball by Mendil after a Mantalos shot. The end of the match was dramatic: Volos finished with nine men, as Mygas was sent off with a red card in the 90+4th minute and Mendil in the 90+6th.

For Marko Nikolić’s side this was the first win away from Athens this season, not counting cup matches, while Kostas Bratsos’ Volos continue to search for their first three points in the championship. AEK played this match without Varga and Rota.
