The political stalemate continues – closer to an agreement or a return to elections?

Political analyst Arton Muhaxheri estimates that even after the certification of the election results, it remains unclear how the incumbent Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, will act in his efforts to create new institutions.

Muhaxheri, invited to “FIVE” in Dukagjin, said that he does not see any new developments on the political scene, as, according to him, Kurti has not yet announced what his next step will be after the certification of the results.

“I do not see any new developments as these are the signals that Mr. Kurti is giving us, who is not declaring what he will do after the certification of the result. But what has caught my eye is the willingness of LDK to be so close to cooperating with VV, which is something new in these elections, as they have not received any signal from Mr. Kurti that he will invite them to co-govern in the future. It is still an unclear situation and I believe that Mr. Kurti is calculating,” said Muhaxheri.

According to him, Kurti’s lack of willingness for political compromise is making it difficult to reach an agreement on the formation of institutions – while adding that, according to him, Kurti wants the opposition parties to submit to him in order to make possible cooperation possible.

Muhaxhiri added that there are opportunities for creating institutions without going to new elections, but, based on how Kurti has acted in the past, he believes the country is closer to elections than to a political solution.

“Kurti rejects the political agreement because he is a prime minister who does not know the language of compromise and dialogue and this is the problem. I remember that in the past there were controversies between PDK and LDK and that they then found a common language and saw each other as partners. Mr. Kurti does not see them as partners but as subordinates and only if they are subordinate does he see cooperation as possible because all the possibilities are to have institutions and not go to elections. But, knowing Kurti and his past actions, there are more choices than solutions,” said Muhaxheri.

While lawyer Tomë Gashi has stated that the statements of political leaders, including acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti, awaiting the certification of the results by the Central Election Commission (CEC), are part of normal political discourse, according to him there is no real reason to postpone the process of creating institutions.

Gashi, invited to “FIVE” in Dukagjin, said that the election result has been clear since the evening of June 7 and that there was no need to wait for certification to begin political discussions.

“It is normal for Mr. Kurti and other politicians to make political statements while awaiting the certification of the results by the CEC, which is known to be happening next week. I think these are political statements, but they should not have been expected at all since the winner was announced on the evening of June 7. As a political statement, it is appropriate, but there are no other reasons, except if complaints are being expected, since the number of MPs will not change,” said Gashi.

He warned that any delay leading to new elections would be, as he put it, unacceptable.

“It would be scandalous and it is understood that for the third time if we eventually go to early elections, it would be a scandal. I think that all the conditions are for a political agreement and the creation of new institutions,” he added.
